The key question we started with: how much of a CA firm's week is actual accounting judgment, and how much is just moving information from one place to another so that judgment can happen?
At almost every firm we spoke with, the honest answer was that a surprising share of the week — chasing a document, updating a status, sending a reminder, compiling a report nobody asked for but everyone needed — wasn't accounting work at all. It was overhead the software should have absorbed a decade ago.
Why We Started With Automation, Not a Task List
Most practice management tools started as a digital task list — a place to write down what needs doing. That's a real improvement over a notebook, but it still assumes a human has to notice the task, create it, chase it, and update it. We started from a different premise: a task tied to a known rule — a GST return due on a fixed date, a DSC expiring on a fixed date, a client who hasn't responded in three days — shouldn't need a human to notice it at all.

We didn't design this in the abstract. Every automation in Turia — from a WhatsApp reminder that fires when a task changes status, to a GST notice that pulls itself into a tracked task, to an invoice acknowledgment that sends the moment a payment lands — came from watching how a real firm's week actually breaks down, not from a generic project-management template with a compliance skin on it. Where We're Headed
The version of Turia today automates individual tasks — a reminder, a status update, a filing check. The direction we're building toward is a practice where an entire engagement, from client onboarding through the last filing of the year, runs on rules the firm sets once instead of steps someone has to remember every time. Software doesn't replace a chartered accountant's judgment; it should make sure that judgment is the only thing left for a person to do.
